He Wore Blue Velvet: The Connaught Hotel’s New Look Unveiled

We are good at keeping secrets at Fashionizer. It’s part of the job. That said, we’ve been itching to spill the beans on our latest designs for a top London hotel. So it is with a certain amount of relief that we can at last unveil our new uniforms for the super-luxurious and fashionable The Connaught Hotel in London.

Back in March they invited us to design the staff uniforms for the hotel’s iconic Coburg bar, the award-winning Hélène Darroze at The Connaught restaurant and for their in-room dining service. The brief was to bring a fresh, modern look to the uniforms while remaining faithful to the heritage of this destination hotel. Classy, sophisticated, fashionable, chic… right up our (West London) street.

Staff will begin wearing the new designs at the beginning of next year, but in the meantime we can reveal something of the detail.

The colour palette is charcoal, blue and black, with accents that reflect the décor of the hotel, while the fabrics complement its history and status. We are, of course a little biased at Fashionizer, in that we are big believers in natural fabrics. Aside from the comfort factor and sustainability values, we believe it adds a certain gravitas. At the Hélène Darroze at the Connaught (not one, but two Michelin stars), the sommelier uniforms for example have been designed in classy, wool suiting, a perfect reflection of the expertise and respect that should be given to those who really know their wine.

When we blogged about the Premier Vision fabric fair in Paris, we mentioned our hunt for luxurious velvets that were of sufficient quality to stand up to the style and durability demands of a 5* hotel. We found what we were looking for: the Coburg bar staff will be wearing cotton velvet jackets in Caspian blue with satin detail lapels, while the women have a dress with a gorgeous, creative neckline (check out the pictures!) and a matching Caspian blue velvet belt.

It’s not the first time we have worked for the Connaught: we created uniforms for the hotel back in 2008, then for the Aman Spa in 2011. More to come in 2016…
