The Project

Set in the Indian ocean, Zuri Zanzibar Resort is situated on the north-west beach of Unguja, one of the idyllic islands that make up the Zanzibar archipelago. The new resort’s name is fitting; ‘zuri’ is the word for beautiful in Swahili, the local language.

The resort has been carefully created as a micro-universe with the white sand beaches, spice gardens and luxury accommodation complementing each other harmoniously. Ecology and sustainability are central to the resort’s philosophy; locally sourced materials, energy-saving initiatives and community projects have been an important factor in its development. The resort’s owners were therefore seeking a uniform designer that shared their commitment to sustainability.

Fashionizer’s Solution

Fashionizer was invited to deliver the staff uniforms for the opening of the Zuri resort and to enable the resort to manage the future programme locally. This involved interpreting the initial concepts of Czech fashion designer Denisa Nova, as well as sourcing the fabrics and manufacturing the garments. The programme, (Fashionizer’s first new opening in Africa), included reception, F&B, entertainment, and wellness areas.

The brief was to combine luxury with a calm, relaxed image. At the same time, the garments needed to be practical. Comfort is a prime consideration in the tropical climate, and accordingly Fashionizer sourced a range of cotton-rich fabrics that could be draped to fit multiple body shapes. The colour palette reflects the location and the identity of the Spice Islands: hues of sandy brown, turquoise and aqua blue, complemented by fresh white, reminiscent of Unguja’s pristine beaches.

Fashionizer worked closely with me to develop a uniform programme suitable to the conditions in Zanzibar. They offered their expertise in fabrics and styles to ensure our loose fitting garments made in a variety of subtle colours, fit in with our bright environment and local staff. With a tight deadline and working within a set budget, our account manager offered us solutions and monitored our production to ensure everything was shipped on time. We have developed an excellent working relationship with Fashionizer and would highly recommend them as a uniform partner.
