The future’s bright (young things)

The future of wellness and wellness tourism is a key theme in the Global Spa and Wellness Summit this year.  What better way to look to the future than to tap into the energy, creativity of young people.

As a mum to two now-grown-up children I will be interested in the ideas that are put forward in the 5th annual Student Challenge Competition at the Global Spa and Wellness Summit. This year’s brief is for students to showcase ‘A Design and Concept for a Spa of the Future that Encompasses Authentic Indian Culture. ‘ And if that’s not sufficiently testing, the idea has to be good enough to be rolled out globally, and it must be commercially viable, credible and proven – so the sums have to stand up too.

The candidates have been at work since the spring, pulling together their business plans, and three teams will present their work at the summit.  They have a tough act to follow: last year’s winner was the University of Denver, with the challengingly named “Defiant!” spa.  Their concept rejected any pink and glitter themes that might normally be thrust upon the unsuspecting teen market, and proposed instead teen spa model that tackles the emotional, physical and social needs of real girls.

The three teams will face a panel of judges and will hear their fate on the day.  Expect a few excited phone calls home…

Later on:  Holistic treatments, Tibetan style
